“If a child is to keep his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, the excitement, and the mystery of the world we live in.” Rachel Carson
Dear Center School Families,
On the eve of the first day of school I imagine homes filled with nervous excitement and energy. I wonder how many children-and parents- will experience a sleepless night tonight! An educators’ life is extraordinarily special for many reasons, and unique is the privilege and opportunity to begin anew with your children each school year. The students’ excitement and optimism is something that I always await. The Center School bell will toll at 8:30 AM, signally our unique “welcome back” to the 2012-2013 school year.
I extend a warm welcome to new and “veteran” families on behalf of your Center School community. This message provides some logistical information for the morning arrival. Students in grades 1 through 4 will line up on the playground in the back of the school. Our 5th graders will line up on the esplanade. You will see individual signs with the teacher’s name. Our teaching community will be on duty to welcome you, so please ask for assistance if you need help- especially our new families. (Just a reminder that we’ll welcome our pre-k and kindergarten students on September 4th.)
We’ll use this procedure for the first day. Friday August 31st, and thereafter, ALL students will enter the building at 8:30 AM and go directly to class. If your child’s classroom is in the main building [1st, 3rd, 4th] he/she enters through the main doors. All other students [kinder, 2nd, 5th] enter through the esplanade door near the gymnasium. NOTE: If your child rides a bike to school, he/she simply parks the bike and goes directly to the appropriate entrance.
You can anticipate additional information and news about our community in the coming days, including a wealth of information regarding curriculum and happenings. Please be sure to regularly visit this blog and our soon-to-be-redesigned school website: http://www.longmeadow.k12.ma.us/cen/ for up to date information. Visit the teachers’ websites to keep informed of classroom curriculum and activities as well. The Center School Family Handbook is posted on the school website, which includes helpful information, procedures, and policies.
This school year begins my 19th year with Longmeadow Public Schools, 24th year in education, and 4th year as your Principal. I shared with our teaching community on opening day that I reach a realization about my professional and personal life similar to our perceptive character, Minli, in the summer read; and that is a deep feeling of “thankfulness” …I can’t imagine more rewarding work than leadership of such a fine group of dedicated talented educators, caring involved parents, and outstanding students.
My wish for your child is a year -long journey with discoveries as extraordinary and insightful as Minli’s. I encourage you to treasure and celebrate each step of the journey along side your child.
I shall see you in the morning!
Mrs. Hutton, Principal
